Your power company will not maintain your generator
Households on the First Coast are used to the utility handling everything on the far side of the meter. If a JEA line goes down, JEA restores it. If an FPL transformer blows, FPL replaces it. A home standby generator flips that arrangement completely. It lives on your side of the meter, it is your equipment, and no utility on the five-provider patchwork here, not JEA, not FPL, not Clay Electric, not Beaches Energy, not Florida Public Utilities, has any obligation to keep it running. The machine that is supposed to carry the house when the grid quits is the one piece of the power chain that nobody but you is responsible for. That is the whole reason maintenance exists as a service, and it is why an unmaintained generator so often turns out to be the weakest link in the chain during a storm rather than the backup that saved the day.

What the annual visit actually involves
Servicing a standby generator is engine work, not a glance and a signature. On a typical air-cooled home unit, a proper annual visit by the installer we connect you with covers:
- Engine oil and oil filter. Drained and replaced. First Coast heat and St. Johns River humidity age oil faster than the mild-climate interval printed in the manual assumes, and a unit that ran long hours through a storm may be due well ahead of the twelve-month mark.
- Air and fuel filters. Swapped so clean air and clean fuel reach the engine. Coastal pollen and humid air load an air filter faster than an inland one would.
- Spark plugs. Pulled, inspected, cleaned or replaced so the engine fires on the first crank rather than laboring.
- Battery under load. Load-tested with a real draw, not a resting-voltage reading. More on this below.
- A real transfer test. Utility power is cut at the automatic transfer switch so the whole sequence runs the way it will in an outage: the unit senses the loss, cranks, comes up to speed, and picks up the actual household load. A generator that exercises weekly at no load can still stumble when the air handler’s compressor kicks in.
- Connections, mounts, fuel line, and regulator checked for corrosion, wear, and looseness.
The battery is the number-one reason units fail to start
When a standby unit clicks during an outage but never turns over, the battery is almost always why. It reads perfectly fine sitting idle, then collapses the instant the starter pulls current from it. Sustained Northeast Florida heat is hard on lead-acid batteries and routinely drops their real service life below the two-to-three-year figure quoted nationally. Every visit should load-test the battery, and it should be replaced on a schedule rather than run until it dies on the worst possible night. This is the cheapest insurance on the entire machine, and it prevents the single most common and most frustrating storm-night outcome: a mechanically healthy generator that simply will not wake up.
Humidity and salt air move the service goalposts
The First Coast throws two conditions at a generator that inland maintenance schedules never account for. The first is the sheer humidity that comes off the St. Johns River and the marshes, which works its way into the enclosure and encourages corrosion on terminals and control connections all year, not just during storm season. The second is salt air. Homes out on Amelia Island, in Ponte Vedra, and along the Beaches sit in a corrosive coastal environment that attacks the steel housing, the hinges, the ground lug, and the electrical contacts. A start failure near the water is frequently not an engine problem at all. It is a green, crusted terminal or a pitted contact where damp, salt-heavy air crept into the panel. A coastal service visit should include a close look for rust lifting the paint, corrosion on the battery posts and ground connections, and any breach in the enclosure seal, none of which shows up on a diagnostic readout and all of which needs someone standing at the unit.
The June deadline that organizes the year
Hurricane season opens June 1, and the practical move here is to have the unit serviced in the spring, before the season begins, rather than during it. This is a scheduling reality more than a superstition. Irma in 2017 pushed the St. Johns River and Black Creek to record flooding, Matthew sideswiped the coast in 2016, and Ian and Nicole both crossed the state in 2022, and in every case installer calendars filled within hours once a named system was in the forecast. What service tends to cost
A single annual tune-up on the First Coast generally falls in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars for a standard air-cooled home unit, with liquid-cooled or high-hour systems higher, and parts usually billed separately. Those are general ranges only, set by the local installer based on your equipment and access, and nothing here is a quote. Where maintenance ends and other work begins
Maintenance is preventive by definition. A unit already flashing a fault, refusing to crank, or shutting itself down mid-outage is repair work, and the two often meet on a single visit when a tune-up turns up a corroded part.
